Do we need to have a message with every piece of art, or does the message come later...
What comes first, the story or the brushstroke? Does art always have to say something... why so serious!
I've asked myself this question more times than I can count. Sometimes I sit down with a clear intention, wanting to tell a story. Other times, I play. Colour finds colour, brushstroke after another...There is no destination...Then, days later, I step back and realize it has been speaking all along, so I let it be, with all its imperfections, and permit myself to be imperfect too.
It was my subconscious gently revealing something I wasn't yet ready to put into words.
The message didn't come before the painting. The painting uncovered the message.
I've also learned not to force meaning into every canvas. Not everything needs to be profound. Sometimes, creating is enough. Sometimes beauty is enough. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to create without the pressure of explanation.
Perhaps that's what art teaches me most.
To embrace imperfection.
To trust the process.
To let things become what they were always meant to be.
Like many artists, I continue to learn. I take classes. I study the work of artists I admire. There are moments when I wonder if I'm borrowing too much of someone else's way of seeing. Should I stop? Should I only listen to my own voice?
Then a quieter thought arrives: "Learn from everyone. Collect pieces of wisdom from every teacher, every artist, every experience. Not to become a copy of them, but to become a fuller version of yourself".
Every master was once inspired by another. Every artist stands on the shoulders of those who painted before them. Their lessons become part of us until, one day, our own voice naturally begins to emerge.
And perhaps that is the balance.
I cannot become who I am without learning from others.
And I cannot truly honour what I have learned unless I eventually give something back.
So I return to my original question.
What do I want to say?
And then another question quietly follows.
Do I need to say anything at all?
Maybe the painting already knows.
Maybe my job is simply to create it and step aside.
To allow each viewer to discover a different story within the same colours.
Because once a painting leaves the artist's hands, it no longer belongs to only one story.
It belongs to everyone who stands before it.
A story told through paint is a story told by the viewer.
A life lived to create becomes a whisper to one another.
Let the brushstrokes speak for themselves.
With light and magic through others' eyes
Bewildered, wondering selves, look as far as the sky allows.
Allow the painting to whisper.
With words that belong only to you
Let in colours and textureLet in light that settles within you.
